Interferometry
Interference occurs when two or more coherent light beams are superimposed. It can be observed as an interference pattern caused by the constructive and destructive interference as a result from the superposition of the light waves. Interferometry enables the precise measurement of smallest displacements, refractive index changes and surface irregularities.
The technology has a wide range of applications in science and industry. For example, our lasers measure the precise angle between the two telescopes on the GAIA satellite which is mapping the exact position of more than a billion of stars throughout our Milky Way galaxy. They help to control the production process in steel mills by measuring the velocity of hot steel during the rolling process.
Since interferometry depends on the coherence of the light the wavelength stability and the linewidth of the laser source determines the accuracy of the measurement. Thus, our single frequency lasers are the perfect light source. Our DFB laser have a small linewidth providing long coherence lengths needed for precise interferometric measurements in all kinds of research ranging from quantum mechanics to astronomy. For less demanding applications we offer our so-called RWS lasers that provide a cost effective solution for a wide range of industrial or medical applications
